TL;DR: Summary on How To Glow Up

What Does a “Glow Up” Mean?

Let’s define a glow up.

Well, a glow up is when someone goes through a positive life transformation. And no, it’s not all just about looks and getting lip fillers (nothing wrong with getting lip fillers.)

Don’t get me wrong, physical changes can be part of a glow up too. But it really starts with inner shifts – how you think and feel about yourself.

Those internal changes affect your habits, lifestyle choices, and yes, even your physical appearance. It’s about growth both mentally and physically aka (glow up mentally and physically.)

How To Glow Up:

It’s like seeing an old friend you haven’t talked to in ages. You then hang out with them and they are completely different.

They are talking about their goals, aspirations, and workout routines, and they just look incredible.

“Omg, they had an insane glow-up.”

Yet, you feel like you look the same. What are their secrets? Let’s find out!

How to Glow Up Mentally:

1. Challenge and Believe in Yourself

Pushing yourself outside your comfort zone creates an empowering sense of belief in your abilities.

When you say you’re going to accomplish something and actually do it, your mind takes note. Over time, stacking these small wins builds an unshakable foundation of confidence and self-trust.

Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself – whether it’s learning a new skill, trying a daring activity, or pushing your mental focus.

As you reach new capabilities, your self-image shifts. You start to look and feel unstoppable.

"Don’t build confidence. Build evidence. Confidence comes as a result of evidence. Not the other way around."
-Alex Hormozi

2. Try Cold Showers

I love cold therapy.

Real talk though- I won’t pretend cold showers are fun in the moment. But I gotta say, afterward I feel so pumped and accomplished. It is a great tool to add to your glow-up challenge. It builds mental resilience, releases feel-good hormones, and wakes you up in the morning.

3. Journal

pink journal on table with pencils

Journaling allows you to process emotions, gain self-awareness, and explore your inner world – critical parts of a mental glow up. Writing out your thoughts, whether through free-flowing entries or guided journal prompts, can be super therapeutic.

Identifying patterns in how you react or feel in certain situations leads to growth. Over time, regular journaling enables you to identify your needs, values, insecurities, and dreams on a deeper level. The insights gained become powerful fuel for your glow up journey.

PS: Have fun with it! Get a cute journal (this is my 2024 journal) , some calligraphy  pens, cute stickers, and get to writing!

4. Watch What You’re Listening To

What you listen to shapes your thinking more than you realize. Experts say the subconscious mind absorbs everything it hears, even in the background.

That’s why it’s key to glow up your audio influences – from the people you surround yourself with to the podcasts and the music you play.

Curate voices that uplift and empower you rather than drag you down.

5. Read and Learn (I’m Serious)

I’m serious! Reading and learning and not in the way you may be used to. School can dampen our joy for learning and reading. I’m talking about learning something you love. Music, nutrition, playing, volleyball, etc.

Reading can help you relax or pull away without being attached to a screen. It can also improve your vocabulary, and communication skills, and even inspire you. All things that can help you achieve a full glow up.

I recommend this book to all of my friends! ‘The Science of Self Learning‘ honestly changed my perspective on how I view education and leveling up plus it gives you tips on how to learn things quicker and faster!

6. Set Goals

What the heck does that mean? You want to have something to strive towards! Every day wake up for a reason. Create a list of things you would like to see happen. Next week, a year from now, a decade. Personal, relational, physical, and mental.

7. Watch that Screen Time!

Set up screen time for yourself, I beg you. It was a life changer for me. Stop comparing yourself, distracting, and procrastinating. It usually feels good to scroll at the moment, but after a while, you feel like crap.

Setting screen time  improved my mental health and energy levels significantly.

It would create friction for me.  I had a decision to make. Do I consciously add more time and keep scrolling? or do I decide to do something different that will make me feel better?

8. Create a Supportive Environment

Aesthetic room with pink tones. Plants and paintings with white desk

Your surroundings impact your mindset and how you feel. Ensure your space elicits positive emotions with colors that make you feel good and pleasant scents, and keep your space clean!

You can also hang up inspirational quotes and affirmations. When your environment provides comfort and encouragement, inner motivation increases. AKA a way to make you feel your absolute best.

9.  Get Your Self-Care Going

This is so important! Glowing up isn’t always about doing tasks, doing “better, or even changing ourselves. It is supposed to be rooted in a loving place.

Take yourself on a date, go to the gym, hit the sauna, go for a drive, get your hair done, and cook your favorite meal. All of these things fill your cup. You will show up better in all aspects of your life (the point of a glow up).

10. Watch Your Motives

Do things out of love not hate. Go for a walk because it will make you feel good and is great for you. Don’t do it to burn calories, try to achieve something, out of hate.

Ask yourself why you want a glow up. If the drive is external validation or dislike of your current self, it won’t sustain. For a glow up you’ve got to do it from self-love.

Do activities for inherent enjoyment, not pressures to achieve an ideal. Check your mindset – are you reacting out of inspiration or desperation? Lasting motivation flows from within.

11. Asses your Habits and Create New Ones

Take some time to look at your current habits. Which ones make you feel good and are helpful vs which ones are making you feel bad?

Create new habits get like getting changed first thing in the morning, getting ready, taking a cold shower, making your bed, going to sleep by 10 pm, etc.

To replace old habits that aren’t serving you, you need to have new and improved habits to replace them with.

12. Determine Your Values

Figuring out your core values is a game-changer, yet so underrated. Take some time to get clear on what truly matters most to you. Your values are like a filter that guides your life choices – who you befriend, how you spend your time, and what opportunities you pursue.

When you know your values, decision-making becomes much easier. Let your values lead the way as you continue on your glow-up journey.

13. Have a Routine

Many of us thrive on structure, I know I do. Have a routine you can stick to! Don’t copy someone else’s or add things to your routine you know are unrealistic. Set yourself up for success!

For example, don’t schedule out every single hour. Things will come up that interfere with this routine, you don’t stick to it, and then feel bad about yourself. Take a look at this sample routine

14. Get Outside

A quick walk, hike, or picnic lets you reset. Being outdoors relieves stress and makes you show up better in your relationships and habits.

15. Practice Mindfulness

Practicing mindfulness can help you achieve an inner glow. Try taking a few minutes each day to tune into your senses – notice what you can see, hear, smell, taste, and feel around you. Focus on your breathing and ground yourself in the present moment.

Simple mindful activities like walking barefoot or sipping tea can center you. Regular mindfulness exercises will make you calmer and more present. Everyone likes to be around people who are calm, present, and have positive energy!

16. Get a Goodnight’s Rest

Aim for 7-9 hours per night so you can wake up looking gorgeous instead of like a zombie.

Proper sleep prevents those unwanted under-eye bags, keeps your skin clear, and gives you the energy to take on the day with confidence. No one looks their best when they’re exhausted.

Start going to bed at a reasonable time – you’ll be stunned by how refreshed, vibrant, and radiant you look and feel!

How to Glow Up Physically:

17. Face Massages

Massaging your skin helps drain lymphatic fluid, contours your facial muscles, and boosts radiance. Invest in gadgets like face rollers, gua sha tools, or ice globes to reap these benefits.

Use gentle, upward strokes to lift and stimulate your complexion. A regular facial massage routine will leave your skin looking toned, defined, and luminous. Great glow up step!

I highly recommend  @valeriiaveksler on Instagram! Her face-massage tutorials are amazing.

18. Stop touching your skin!

Girl looking in mirror touching her skin

This is pretty self-explanatory, but not super easy as someone who struggles with skin picking, I can attest. Have a little sticky note on your mirror “Don’t Touch Your Skin” Remember, touching your skin can lead to germs, irritation, infections, and scars.

19. Find a good skincare routine

Part of your glow up challenge includes nailing down an effective skincare routine. Do your research and consult skinfluencers or dermatologists to find products that work for your skin type (i linked my personal faves below).

With a consistent regimen focused on nourishing, revitalizing, and washing your face you’ll achieve, healthy, glowing skin. These are the basics to improve the appearance of your skin:

  • Cleansing:  Cleansing your face morning and night to remove impurities is one of the most basic, but effective, glow up tips.
  • Exfoliating: Regularly exfoliate to slough away dead skin cells and reveal fresh, radiant skin.
  • Serums: Use serums with active ingredients (vitamin C, hyaluronic acid ,etc) that address specific skin concerns.
  • Moisturizing: Hydration is essential for your skin, especially after exfoliating.
  • Masking: Help your skin glow 1-2 times per week with a face mask.
  • Nose-strips: Nose strips can help clean out your pores.

20. Get Hydrated

Water is crucial for so many things. 80% water. It will help with your skin, metabolism, hormones, literally everything.

Tips to drink more water:

  • Use a straw (makes it fun.)
  • Add some  flavor (lime juice, mint, etc.)
  • Use bottles with little time stamps.
  • Set alarms that remind you to drink water.

21. Use Sunscreen, PLEASE!

Look, I know we want that amazing tan. But we also don’t want to look 60 when we are 40. So do me a favor, let’s avoid the unnecessary sun marks and wrinkles, and apply that SPF!

22. Start Using a Silk Pillow

This is a game changer!! This is great for your skin and hair. Its softness reduces the frizz in your hair and helps your hair retain moisture-speaking from experience. Time to glow up your hair!

23. Watch Your Face/Hair Care products

Even if a girl with great skin recommended it on TikTok, it is important to look at the products you are using, especially on your skin.

We want to make sure they are quality ingredients that aren’t causing outbreaks, acne, or irritation. Your skin is absorbing these products!

Do some research to find clean, non-toxic beauty products with natural ingredients that complement your skin type. Take control of your skincare routine and your skin will thank you with a natural, healthy glow.

24. Hair Care Routine

Cookie-cutter haircare doesn’t work – you’ve got to customize your routine for your unique locks. Figure out your hair type – dry, oily, curly, color-treated – then find products specifically formulated for it. Using the wrong shampoos and conditioners can leave your hair fried, so do some trial and error to discover your dream routine.

Taking care of your air is one of the best ways to glow up!

25. Stop Frying Your Hair

Whether you are trying to make your hair straight, curly, blonde, or brunette. Please stop using heat on it every day! I beg you. In the long run, it’s better to keep your hair healthy.

To get a nice hair glow up, start using a heat protectant and consider adding heatless curls and hairmasks to your beauty routine

26. Determine Your Face Shape

You can use a quiz to determine your face shape:

This is not for you to obsess or criticize it is simply to determine what looks would look the most flattering on you (eyebrow shape, eyeliner type, and haircut.)

27. Play Around With Makeup

See what you feel best in! Have fun with makeup tutorials. What type of eyeliner shape suits you? What colors match your complexion best, lipstick or lip gloss? etc.

28. Re-vamp Your Wardrobe

Find clothes that suit you the best and make you feel confident. Identify colors and textures that work well for you and have many options like these in your closet. Use clothes that accentuate your favorite features.

Identifying your body shape can also help determine what type of clothes suit you best.

29. Find a Sustainable Way to Eat

I’m so over yo-yo dieting and trying to force-feed myself whatever’s trendy right now. Instead, I’ve started tuning into what makes my body feel good – and that looks different for everyone!

Forget fad diets – find an eating lifestyle that you can sustain long-term. Pay attention to how different foods make you feel, and honor your body’s unique cravings and hunger signals. Enjoy a balanced variety of wholesome, healthy foods you love in proper portions to nourish your body and mind.

Make sure to get enough protein for satiation, fruits, and veggies for micronutrients, and healthy fats to make your skin glow.

Discovering a personalized, feel-good way of eating will boost your health, energy, and radiance in all ways.

30. Find a Sustainable Way to Move

Girls with workout clothes and holding yoga mats

The good old gym rat vs pilates girl debate.  Find a way to move that you enjoy. Hot girl walks, weightlifting, yoga, pilates, cycling, dancing, etc. This will lead you to be consistent. Consistency compounds!

Don’t use it as punishment or a chore. Approach movement as a celebration of what your body can do, not a chore.

Exercise consistently by making it a rewarding, feel-good part of your routine. The regular movement you love will get your blood flowing for a natural glow while building lifelong healthy habits. It will also help:

  • Boost metabolism.
  • Build muscle.
  • Increase lymphatic flow.
  • Boost your mood.

Let’s get that physical glow up going!

31. Seek Professional Help

Enlisting pros has been a total game-changer for my glow-up goals! Whether it’s a therapist to help me mentally, a nutritionist guiding me on ways to improve my eating patterns, or a doctor to check my hormone levels, their expertise is invaluable. Building your own “glow up team” could be extremely beneficial.

If this is an option for you, I highly recommend it!

32. Fix Your Posture

Slouching can drag down both your mood and your appearance. Make a conscious effort to sit up straight, roll your shoulders back, and hold your head high. Proper posture projects confidence, self-assurance, and glow. Simply fixing your stance can give you an instant glow-up. So mind your posture – stand tall and act like the gorgeous, put-together person you want to become!

33. Fake it ‘Til Ya Make It

Confidence starts from within (not in a cheesy way) so focus on feeling self-assured.

Stand tall, make eye contact, and walk with purpose to any room you enter. Avoid staring at your phone or the ground – keep your gaze forward and your chin up. Even if you’re faking it at first, acting confident can help you feel confident.

By projecting poise and self-belief in your body language, your confidence will project.

34. Say Cheese (aka smile)!

pretty girl smiling with finger on lip

I know – sounds cliché. But legit, science says smiling boosts your mood and reduces stress, so, give it a shot! Flashing your pearly whites gives off a friendly and confident vibe. You attract more people. Studies say “Smiling increases socially perceived attractiveness.

Easy way to glow up your face and make you look and feel better.

35. Brush, Floss, White, and All of The Above

Don’t overlook your smile in your glow up goals! Clean, bright teeth are key for looking and feeling your best. Make oral care a part of your daily routine:

  • Brush (I opt for fluoride-free) thoroughly twice a day, especially after coffee or wine to prevent stains
  • Floss every night to clean between teeth.
  • Use a tongue scraper to remove bacteria buildup.
  • Try whitening strips, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide mixes periodically to make them whiter.
  • Swishing coconut oil to whiten your teeth and freshen your breath.

Having clean teeth is so basic but key. It improves the way you look and feel! No bad breath and confidence in that smile.

36. Get a Mani-Pedi

Giving your hands and feet a polish can make some of us feel confident.

Whether it’s the clacking of the nails on the phone screen, the pretty colors, or the length, it can make you feel more confident.

When you feel more confident you act more confident and it is a great form of self-care.

37. Find your Signature Scent

Having a signature scent is one of my favorite tips on how to glow up.

A scent that people associate with you.

It can be a specific perfume, body spray, deodorant, or even an essential oil.

There is nothing better than someone associating a specific smell with you! ( I always smell like lemongrass essential oils…my friends can attest.)

Glow Up Relationally:

37. Express How You are Feeling

Bottling up your feelings does no favors for your glow-up, girl!

Letting emotions fester inside will only drag down your mood, mental health, and relationships. Instead, find healthy ways to express yourself – vent privately journaling your thoughts, opening up to a trusted friend, or confronting who hurt you.

Verbalizing your feelings helps you process them, prevents resentment, and lifts weight off your shoulders.

Don’t keep it inside – speaking up will help you glow up emotionally!

38. Step Away if You are Heated

Preach! One of the biggest parts of glowing up is your presence and vibe. When you can control your temper and step away from a situation that has you heated, it shows maturity.

Stepping back allows you to reflect, think clearly, and act in a better way. Taking a timeout to cool down will make you feel better in the long run.

Keeping your composure demonstrates growth and maturity – definite glow up vibes!

39. Don’t Be a Doormat

Being kind doesn’t mean letting people take advantage of you. True confidence comes from self-respect – know your worth and expect respect from others.

Set boundaries in relationships and stand up for yourself when crossed. Loving yourself first makes it easier to demand fair treatment without people-pleasing or being a doormat.

40. Watch Who You Hang Out With

Girls with gossipy expressions

If your so-called friends are fake, jealous, or bring drama…it’s time to cut the toxicity. Don’t feel obligated to hang with people who dull your glow.

Even if they are good people, but have different goals, interests, and habits that don’t bring out the best in you, it’s okay to phase them out.

You don’t have to be mean about it – just gradually stop hanging out with them so frequently or have an honest conversation.

41. Don’t Seek Validation From Your Relationships

Look for connections that amplify your happiness, not provide it.

The healthiest relationships happen when two self-assured people choose each other, not when they believe that they need each other.

Focus on your inner glow up first!

42. Protect Your Peace

Be selective about who you spend time with. Surround yourself with people who share your values and leave you feeling energized and inspired.

If certain individuals drain your energy or disrespect you, don’t be afraid to move on. Protect your inner glow by cultivating friendships defined by compassion, loyalty, and mutual growth.

43. Don’t Settle / Lower Your Standards

This all radiates confidence and a natural glow. When you respect, love, and care for yourself you have a presence that can’t be faked.

You get to realize you aren’t “being picky.”  You are simply respecting yourself.

44. Set Boundaries

Setting healthy boundaries is a must for glowing up your relationships. Clearly voice your needs and standards of behavior upfront.

Enforcing reasonable limits shows you value yourself and will not accept mistreatment.

Maintaining strong yet flexible boundaries portrays self-respect, maturity, and emotional intelligence – now that’s a glow up!

Sophi's Recommendation

This is the book that has helped me enforce healthy boundaries in every aspect of my life:

45. Know Your Love Language

This is extremely important! when you know how you like receiving  love you can communicate it to your loved one. Not only how you like receiving, but how your loved ones like receiving love. This improves communication, strengthens relationships, and makes everyone feel appreciated and valued.

You can find out you love language by taking a simple test.

This is my personal favorite free site! They have multiple personality, love language, and career tests!

Long Story Short:

I personally think glow ups are great. I believe they get a negative connotation due to social media and brands trying to profit off of people’s insecurities.

At the end of the day, when your intentions come from a positive and loving place, there is nothing wrong with wanting to push, improve, and better yourself.

Remember there is a fine line between accepting yourself and wanting to improve your life, and trying to become someone you are not or change out of hate and spite.

So whether your focus is physical appearance, developing a skill, improving your life circumstances, or elevating your mindset, the most important thing is doing it for the right reasons – for YOU.

Approach your glow up from a place of self-care and growth, not seeking validation or becoming someone else’s idealized fantasy. Stay true to your values and play to your unique strengths.
